When Your Adult Child Goes No Contact

Parent Coaching for Estrangement & Reconnection

When an adult child limits contact, goes no contact, or stops communicating altogether, it can leave parents wondering what happened, what they did wrong, and what they should do next.

Do I reach out?

Do I give them space?

Do I apologize again?

Do I say nothing?

And perhaps the hardest question:

Is there anything I can do to help rebuild the relationship?

There may be.

But often, the first step isn't trying harder.

It's trying a new lens.

Build the Bridge, Without Blame or Shame

Adult-child estrangement is complicated. There is rarely one simple explanation, one person to blame, or one conversation that repairs everything.

My work with parents isn't about deciding who was right or wrong.

It's about helping you understand what may be happening beneath the distance—and identifying what is actually within your control.

Together, we may look at:

  • patterns of communication that developed over time
  • boundaries and how they are being experienced on both sides
  • pressure, expectations and unresolved hurt
  • generational differences in communication and relationships
  • your adult child's need for autonomy
  • your own grief, fear, anger or urgency
  • what your attempts to reconnect may feel like from the other side

Because sometimes the harder we try to repair a relationship, the more pressure the other person feels.

The goal isn't to chase your child back. It's to help build a bridge that feels safe enough to cross.

A Different Question

When your adult child has gone no contact or cut off communication, it's understandable to ask:

"What can I do now to help make this relationship feel safer, steadier, and more possible?"

But we can also ask:

"What might make it feel safer for my child to be in relationship with me?"

That shift matters.

It moves you away from trying to control an outcome you cannot control and toward the part you can influence: how you communicate, respond, regulate, listen and show up in the relationship.

How Coaching Can Help

You cannot control whether or when your adult child reconnects.

But you don't have to remain frozen while you wait.

Coaching for parents experiencing adult-child estrangement can help you:

  • understand patterns without getting stuck in blame
  • separate what you can control from what you can't
  • communicate without increasing pressure
  • respond rather than react
  • recognize when reaching out may help—and when stepping back may help more
  • prepare for difficult conversations
  • create healthier boundaries
  • stay grounded while living with uncertainty
  • begin changing your side of the relationship, even before your child is ready to change theirs

This is not about taking all the blame.

And it isn't about blaming your adult child.

No blame. No shame. Just FORWARD.

Sometimes the First Change Happens Before Reconnection

I have worked with parents who came to me frightened that the relationship with their adult child was gone.

The work wasn't about finding the perfect text or convincing their child to come back.

We slowed things down.

We looked at the relationship through a different lens.

We reduced pressure.

We changed communication.

We focused on what the parent could actually control.

And in some families, communication has reopened.

There are never guarantees with relationships. But there can be a way to move forward—even when you can't control what the other person does.

You Don't Have to Figure Out Your Next Step Alone

If your adult child has gone no contact, significantly reduced contact, or pulled away—and you're unsure whether to reach out, step back, apologize, set a boundary, or simply wait—we can start there.

You don't need to solve the entire relationship today.

You just need to understand your next step FORWARD.
